Chevening Scholarships enable outstanding emerging leaders from all over the world to pursue one-year masters’ degrees in the United Kingdom. Whilst there is no ‘typical’ Chevening Scholar, we are looking for the kind of people who have the passion, ideas, and influence to provide the solutions and leadership needed to create a better future.

The Chevening Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Chevening-Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS)Fellowships are aimed at mid-career academics or professionals who are dedicated to the promotion of academic activities which in turn will encourage a more informed understanding of the culture and civilisation of Islam and contemporary Muslim societies.

The under listed fellowships are collaborations between the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the OCIS:

  1. Chevening OCIS Fellowship and
  2. Chevening OCIS Abdullah Gül Fellowship

Fellows will undertake a 6-month period of self-directed research focusing on their own project on the culture and civilisation of Islam and contemporary Muslim societies in a global context.

OCIS has been a Recognized Independent Centre for the University of Oxford and provides a meeting point for the Western and Islamic worlds of learning.


Aim and Benefits of this scholarship

  1. Six-month period of research at OCIS.
  2. Living expenses for the duration of the fellowship will be covered.
  3. Return economy airfare from home country to the UK.
  4. Allowance package for research-related activities.
  5. Access to a programme of cultural events and activities organized by the FCO and the Chevening Secretariat.


Requirements for Masters Scholarship Qualification

To be eligible for a Chevening OCIS Fellowship scholarship, you must:

  1. Demonstrate the potential to rise to a position of leadership and influence
  2. Demonstrate the personal, intellectual and interpersonal attributes reflecting this potential
  3. Be a citizen of Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Philippines, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, or Uzbekistan
  4. Return to country of your citizenship at the end of the period of the fellowship
  5. Hold a postgraduate level qualification (or equivalent professional training or experience in a relevant area) at the time of application
  6. Have significant professional and/or academic research experience (at least five years)
  7. Provide evidence of meeting at least the minimum English language abilities for Chevening Awards
  8. Not hold British or dual-British citizenship
  9. Not be an employee, a former employee, or relative of an employee (since July 2016) of Her Majesty’s Government (including British embassies/high commissions, the Department for International Development, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, Department for International Trade, the Ministry of Defense and the Home Office), the British Council, or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Note: Immediate relatives are defined as parents or step-parents, siblings or step-siblings, children or step-children, spouse, civil partner or unmarried (where the couple has been in a relationship akin to marriage or civil partnership for at least two years)

Please note that applicants who have previously received financial benefit from a HMG-funded scholarship or fellowship are eligible to apply after a period of five years following the completion of their first HMG funded award. In these cases, applicants will be required to demonstrate their career progression from that point. The acronym HMG stands for Her Majesty Government.
